In the past you could, just make a new account, which would come with a new license for the free standard edition, and just use that.
This account registration MAY HAVE gotten screwed up on their website (its happened to me and at least 3 other people I can think of). At some point, whether you remember or not, you probably gave an email and a password to them.
In order to get your license key to activate (what im assuming was) a free version of the tool, you need to login to the yoyogames website with your email and password to get it. The main difference being that you can actually build test and post to the steam store with the steam version, which you cannot do with the ordinary desktop version. So heres the issue, (ive never used the steam version of gm so this may be innacurate) i believe the steam version of gamemaker is a different version of gamemaker standard edition. Ive had several problems with this in the past, and im pretty sure ive probably made like 7 different gamemaker accounts because of it.
